We recently switched internet provider to Vodafone UK, getting a better deal on a 900 Mbps connection.

I already had a PPPoE connection configured with Plusnet so I pre-configured the settings in anticipation of the switch-over.

Before this can be configured, you’ll need your connection username and password. This can only be provided on a help chat from Vodafone, so you’ll need to wait until a few days after you place your connection order. It should take the form dsl<somenumbers>@broadband.vodafone.co.uk.

Vodafone support advised me that there was a VLAN ID of 901 for FTTP Consumer, but that turned out to be unnecessary for us. We are connected with OpenReach so maybe CityFibre needs it?

I have connected the OpenReach ONT to ether1.

Optional - Add the VLAN901 in case it’s needed:

/interface vlan
add name=vlan901-ether1 interface=ether1 vlan-id=901

Use either interface=vlan901-ether1 or interface-ether1 as required below, and add the Vodafone supplied username and password:

/interface pppoe-client
add name=pppoe-vodafone interface=vlan901-ether1 \
    user="<username>" password="<password>" \
    max-mtu=1492 max-mru=1492 \
    add-default-route=yes use-peer-dns=yes \
    dial-on-demand=no disabled=no

Add the PPPoE interface into the WAN list for firewall:

/interface list member
add list=WAN interface=pppoe-vodafone

Check this rule (or some form of NAT) is configured on your firewall:

/ip firewall nat
add chain=srcnat out-interface-list=WAN action=masquerade
